UN-Human Rights Council

The UN General Assembly resolution 60/251, adopted on March 15, 2006, established the Human Rights Council as the United Nations' primary human rights body, replacing the Commission on Human Rights.

This resolution outlined the Council's structure, membership, and functions, setting the stage for its work.

In the book “The First 365 Days of the Human Rights Council”, published by Lars Müller in 2007, I write how the idea for the creation of the Human Rights Council was born. It was mentioned in a paper of Professor Walter Kälin in Berne.
The Swiss newspaper “Le Temps” published an article about my role in the creation of the HRC in June 2006.

Next year, on 15 March 2026, it will be 20 years since the adoption of the UN-Resolution 60/251.
