The next morning, I phoned the Hotel Excelsior in Dubrovnik and asked about the two paintings that had caught Katherine's eye when she had stopped in front of the hotel gallery. I drew the paintings from memory on a piece of paper and sent a fax to the gallery. The woman in charge of the gallery recognised the paintings straight away. I ordered the paintings. All I then had to do was to organise their transportation ... I paid an unemployed man in Sarajevo 400 Marks for him to pick up the paintings in Dubrovnik and bring them back on the same day.
There was still the question as to how could I give the paintings to Katherine without making her angry. I invited her out to lunch. The earliest possible date was in three days' time.
In the meantime I arranged to meet Pablo. In a Turkish restaurant in the old town I told him of my worries. It did me good. At last, I could speak to someone about the fact that I had fallen in love. On my way back to the office I met Katherine and Ralf - I cursed all chance meetings as I saw them. It was a very peculiar meeting indeed!
"You're great, Renato! Ralf and I are discussing the mine problems in Bosnia!" I kissed Katherine, shook Ralf's hand - and then I was gone!
