"Now you've got two women to take home" exclaimed Katherine as she took my other arm. The three of us walked through the moonlit night. My whole body was trembling, I was suffering spasms all over. What a delightful burden! My heart and blood stood still.
Katherine took Jacqueline and me to see her tiny apartment, just large enough for herself only; she took leave of us with a friendly kiss. I took Jacqueline back to her house. I said good-bye in front of the door and then found myself under a street lamp not knowing where I ought to go. My knees were still shaking. A green branch lying by the roadside came to my rescue. I picked it up and made my way dizzily back to Katherine's flat. There, I placed the branch in front other door and took leave of Katherine again - this time "Without Katherine". Goodbye! Swaying, I made my way back home to Emina, my landlady, and Goldie, her dog, whose barking brought me abruptly down to earth.
