When I was young, Margreth was in love with me. I wasn't in love with her. My friend Emil, though, was in love with her. Margreth and Emil got married.

Margreth confided to me her tale of unfortunate coincidences: Not that many weeks ago she fell in love with Anton. They were both having a mid-life crisis, and they basked in this romance.

A month later and suddenly Margreth didn't want to have anything more to do with Anton. She ended the relationship. Anton felt himself abandoned and attempted suicide in the mountains, only to be saved by his son. After a short stay in hospital, Anton was admitted to a psychiatric clinic.

In this clinic, one of the nurses was Margreth and Emil's only daughter, whom Anton did not know. Anton told her his tragic story, and that very same day she reported the story of her mother's affair with Anton to her father.

The next day, Emil filed for divorce.
